PAUL CLARK   Personal Statement

1 2 3 4

Paul’s work stems from the naturally chaotic movement of water on mud in Morecambe Bay and the River Kent estuary. Structure and chaos exist in dynamic tension within this landscape.

In his abstract work, structured and predictable marks stand in dynamic relationship to the marks formed out of chaos. They reflect natural forms and movement - universally chaotic patterns.

His work has developed into pouring paint – allowing the settled result to sit against structured forms.

The emblematic quality of marks can lead in many associative directions – visual, emotional, cognitive - yet the often apparently insignificant marks made in the process of production, anchor the viewer to the tangible reality of canvas, pigment, surface - the here and now.

“I want to keep my hand as invisible as possible in each work as if the paint adopts its correct position.”
